Another trip to NYC, and info about this week’s broadcast
By Helen ~ December 15, 2011
We continue our celebration of the holiday season! You’ve maybe noticed we’re doing a three-week series of special eTown holiday programs, two from the past and also this year’s 2011 offering.
This week we bring back our Christmas show from last year, with Indigo Girls and Tim O’Brien as our musical guests. Nick and the eTones and I provide musical backup for our friends Emily and Amy of Indigo Girls. I love those guys, they’re just the coolest. They’ll be doing some holiday tunes from their seasonal CD “Holly Happy Days.” Great conversation with those two and Nick, really fun.
Nick’s Hot Rize band mate and long time friend and collaborator Tim O’Brien is also with us to celebrate the season with Yuletide themed songs. And there’s a pretty cool holiday themed E-Chievement Award story too this week. This is one of my favorite shows and I hope you like it too.
Just returned from NYC, had a wonderful time there (though I was sick as a dog through it all – turns out I have bronchitis of all things). Nothing like the Big Apple during the holidays. So alive, so festive, so fun. I so love that city. Spent a lot of time in Brooklyn this trip, something we’ve never done before. We stayed for a good portion of our trip at our daughter (Nick’s natural born, my step) Erika’s cozy little apartment; enjoyed strolling the neighborhood and taking in the sights.
Also attended a dinner & music party at the home of some friends, where Nick jammed with Chris Thiele, Paul Kowert and Gabe Witcher (of the Punch Brothers), Tony Trischka, Steve Martin, Mark Johnson, and more – and lucky me, I got to sing a song or two with them as well. Lots of fun.
It was a good trip, tough though because I’d been sick for several weeks and honestly had thought I’d be well by now. Good to have found out what it is, finally. I’ve known for awhile that at this point I’m not contagious, just chronic, but I’d been resisting getting antibiotics; went for the natural herb route but with no success. Antibiotics are unfortunately now officially my routine (for those of you who know me well, that is NOT something I do willingly, but in this case I’m just so sick of being, well, sick).
OK, I’m complaining, but the truth is, I’m so fortunate that such aid is at hand. So many Americans are without simple health care options, and many more are in danger of losing the chance of having health insurance if certain people in Congress have their way. Here in the greatest country in the world, how can so many citizens be without health care? And without enough to eat? It baffles me. These are not deadbeats, I’m talking about good people just like you and me, decent human beings who’ve lost their jobs because of downsizing, or who’ve fallen victim, for one reason or another, to these hard times. It could happen to any of us. I just hate it when people are so quick to judge someone who is in need.
Yikes, there I go. I’ll stop. You know how I can get. But I won’t go there right now. I do that often enough here, right?
Hey, just a gentle reminder: We still have a matching $50K grant in place; you can help keep eTown on the air with a tax deductible, end of year donation. We are a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that only asks for operational support once a year, so please consider giving whatever you can to help keep eTown broadcasts/podcasts coming to you each week. Your gift makes a huge difference. Donating is secure and easy to do and there are two ways you can do so: go to our website www.etown.org and donate on-line; OR send a check to: eTown, P.O. Box 954, Boulder, Colorado, 80306.
Thank you in advance for considering helping us meet this challenge grant!
Gotta run, I’m due in the studio to edit a show. Talk soon.
Listen in next week for our 2011 yuletide broadcast; and this week, enjoy the repeat airing of eTown’s 2010’s holiday program with special guests Indigo Girls and Tim O’Brien.
Best wishes to you always,
Helen

Helen,
Well wishes to you and yours for the Holidays. The antibiotic story w/bronchitis is a very familiar refrain. Been there, done that…and I am a nurse. You can only fight for so long and sometimes have to give in to the inevitable. Possibly your immunity was low and you could not fight it off w/o them, possibly there was a difficult bacteria involved. Just give in to it and allow your body to heal…It is OK to be sick at this time.
Thank you for your words on the Health Care situation. After being a part of the Health Care System for over 30yrs, I am so frustrated that we find ourselves no better off than we are. The resistance to change is infuriating. We cannot allow others to be ill and not serve them. Where the thought to the contrary has come from is baffling. How can we as a society not care for each other??? Anyway, thank you for your words. Hope you are bettter. Pattie
Thanks Pattie for your advice – hope you had a great holiday. Happy New Year!
