Happy New Year!! One of my favorite bands on this week’s show – and a few thoughts on 2012:
By Helen ~ December 27, 2011
We’ve got a great show for you, to finish off our 2011 broadcast season, featuring our old friends, the Grammy winning band (they’re one of my favorite bands of all times, and yes, that includes the Beatles) Los Lobos.
First of all, these are some of THE nicest people you’ll ever hope to meet; no manner where we run into them, they are always so kind and welcoming and great. Second, they are musically fantastic. If you don’t know of this band, please, tune in. You will love them. Their sound encompasses everything from Spanish-Mexican influenced songs to their own original rock AND traditional tunes. Once you get familiar with them, you’ll know them the instant you hear them, they are that unique. It’s good stuff, great writing, great singing, great playing. At the time of this show taping, it had been eight years since they’d played on the show, so we were all pretty excited to have them back. I remember I was sicker than a dog this show; I think we even poke fun at me and how I sound, if I’m remembering correctly (the old ‘clothespin on the nose’ thing). It was a bummer at the time to deal with, couldn’t sing a lick; but still it was a great evening.
Btw local Ft. Collins group SHEL is with us, four young, classically trained sisters with their own unique sound. Big on harmony vocals (you know me, I’m a sucker for harmony vocals, especially of the sibling variety). There’s also a great E-Chievement Award story too of course. It’s a great way to finish out the year, so I hope you can be with us.
So . . the new year. 2012. According to some, it’s the end of the world. That’s of course been largely debunked; just read where scholars have concluded that the Mayan calendar only goes through 2012 because, well, that’s just how long they extended it out at the time, which kind of makes sense doesn’t it? But what if it IS true? I honestly doubt it. But let’s pretend it’s the last year we’ll know. What would you do differently? What would you change, if you could, in your life specifically? I’m really curious, would like to know. If you’re so moved to comment, you can scroll down to the bottom of the blog section here to do so.
For me, I think I would make a point, for one thing, to reach out to many more people than I currently do, to let them know I care about them. I’m bad at that. And I also think I’d be more blunt (some who know me might find that surprising, as I’m pretty apt to speak my mind, however, I usually do so with a healthy dose of Minnesotan politeness thrown in – I think maybe I’d be more like Harry Reid, who says retiring from Congress at the end of this term will free him up to not have to be nice to the people he really doesn’t like!). If I could change my physical pain level I would definitely do that. And I wouldn’t sweat the small stuff.
How about you?
Talk next week,
Helen
