Pokey LaFarge and the South City Three / Shovels & Rope on eTown!
By Helen ~ November 7, 2012
Here’s details about our broadcast/podcast this week:
You’re in for a treat. Seriously. We’re bringing you two world-class Americana groups, both hotter than h*ll and both making their first appearance on our show. Our musical guests this week are Pokey LaFarge (with his great band The South City Three) and the husband/wife duo called Shovels & Rope.
A bit of info on both:
Pokey LaFarge hails from the heartland of America (he was born and raised for the first part of his life in the great state of Illinois; he later moved to St. Louis, Missouri, where he still resides). He’s a guitar-plucking troubadour, a throw back to the past, whose passion for old time music is the cornerstone of his work. Pokey’s been playing professionally both here and overseas since he was a teenager. As a matter of fact, Nick and I first stumbled upon him and The South City Three a few years ago, playing in Denmark! Nick was playing at the Tonder Festival, and he had an afternoon off, so the two of us were just strolling around the lovely town of Tonder, taking it all in, when we came around a corner and there they all were, Pokey and the band, playing on a stage in the middle of the square. We were totally blown away by the musicality and the energy of these guys. When you hear them play, you’re instantly transported back to the 20’s and 30’s; it’s wild. You’ll find it hard to believe these guys are still in their 20’s. And the music? Totally infectious. I defy you to try to keep from tapping your feet at the very least. (Btw I’m not alone in my admiration of them; they’ve recently been discovered by one of my all time favorite artists in the world, Jack Black, and they’ve been opening for him, as well as playing on various projects with him.) As soon as we heard these guys back in Denmark, we knew we had to share them with you on the show, and I’m so happy it’s finally happening! I think you’ll love them.
Speaking of love, I cannot say enough about how much I love Shovels & Rope! This Charleston, South Carolina-based duo consists of wife Cary Ann Hearst and husband Michael Trent. They’ve got a huge sound for just two people, and it’s just so cool the way they trade off playing lead guitar and percussion (on a junkyard drum kit). Again, I cannot sit still when I listen to them, I gotta get up and MOVE, their sound is just wonderful and raucous and wild. And their vocal harmonies! Yikes. Goose bumps. I’m tellin’ you.
The thing I love the most is just how great all these people are, both acts, they’re collectively just the nicest bunch you’d ever want to work with, or hang with. And it comes through in this episode of eTown.
As if these two fine musical acts were not enough, our in-person
E-Chievement Award interview is with our winner, Denis Hayes, environmental activist and co-founder of Earth Day. Wow! Big stuff.
You’re gonna love this one. Videos below too!
