The Darol Anger Fiddle Ensemble
Grammy-nominated Darol Anger is a violinist, fiddler, composer, producer and educator. The recipient of a 1995 California Arts Council Composer Fellowship, Anger was nominated in 1997 for the CalArts Alpert Award in the Arts. He has been a featured soloist on a number of motion picture soundtracks, and he wrote and performed the score for the Sundance Award-winning film Best Offer. He was also the winner of the Frets Magazine Readers’ Poll for Best Jazz Violinist for four years running, from 1982-85. His newest project is The American Fiddle Ensemble, which brings together a new generation of string players that his music initially inspired. Here on the heels of the release of their 2004 debut Republic of Strings, the band is guitarist Scott Nygaard, young five-string fiddler Brittany Haas, and maverick cellist Rushad Eggleston. Anger leads the ensemble through a vast range of material that encompasses bluegrass, pop, r&b, jazz, Brazilian, African, Middle Eastern and Scandinavian influences. The players’ collective skill and improvisational fervor give the project a remarkable sense of continuity.
