Live Show: Friday, Jan 25, 2008 7:00 pm Location: Lincoln Center, Fort Collins
It's eTown 'on-the-road,' with this encore broadcast originally taped in 2008 in Fort Collins, Colorado, with our musical guests The Subdudes and The Roches. The Subdudes share a set of their Americana roots-rock songs that feature their signature three-part harmonies. Then, sisters Maggie, Terre & Suzzy-The Roches-hit the stage with the warm wit, unique lyrical style, and tight sibling harmonies they are known for. Hosts Nick & Helen Forster partner with both artists for a one-of-a-kind eTown finale you won't want to miss! Also, hear the story of a dedicated E-Chievement Award winner who joins us 'in person'-all right here in eTown.
The subdudes
The subdudes have deep New Orleans roots and a Rocky Mountain connection as well. Over the course of 20 years and eight albums, the subdudes have quietly become one of America's national music treasures. The New Orleans-formed group is a living encapsulation of American music, a vibrant cauldron of sounds that stirs together meaty grooves and jazzy dynamics, soulful R&B swagger, easy vocal harmonies, cheeky rock 'n' roll attitude and folky social consciousness -- not to mention some of the sharpest musicianship and ensemble playing you'll ever hear from any five musicians. It's tight enough to be loose, but never gratuitously sloppy. Those virtues have seldom been displayed better than on 'Street Symphony,' the subdudes' third album since regrouping in 2002 after a five-year hiatus. Richly crafted and fiercely executed, it's the document of a veteran band that's still learning, growing and getting better at what it does.
The Roches
"Gorgeous vocal intertwining, served with wit and heart."
-The New Yorker
The Roches are Maggie, Terre, and Suzzy, three sisters from New York City. Known for their swirling harmonies and extraordinary lyrical perspective as well as their smart and fun live performances, they have created a unique musical expression perhaps best described as "Roche Music." Their self titled debut album, The Roches, was hailed as the Best Record of The Year by The New York Times. Their children's recording, Will You Be My Friend, was celebrated with The Parent's Gold Choice Award. We Three Kings, a collection of Christmas and Holiday songs, is a perennial favorite in households all across the United States and overseas. Besides several appearances on The Tonight Show, David Letterman, and A Prairie Home Companion, they have recorded and written music for movies and TV including their own episode of Steven Spielberg's "Tiny Toons," as well as songs for the movie "Land Before Time" and the score for "Crossing Delancey," which included a cameo role for Suzzy. They've performed and recorded with Philip Glass, Paul Simon and The Indigo Girls just to name a few.
