Derreck Kayongo
Aired the week of 06/13/12 - #1224
When Derreck was a child his family fled the Ugandan war and ended up in a Kenyan refugee camp. Overnight he went from living in comfort to having almost nothing. Years later he came to the U.S. to attend college. On his first days in the country he was shocked to realize that American hotels throw away huge amounts of soap; he already knew that millions die each year due to illnesses from poor sanitation and seeing the waste of something so valuable struck a cord in him. Derreck created the Global Soap Project to end this waste, recycle and helps save lives. So far they have distributed over 250,000 bars of reconstituted soap some of the neediest in the world.
