Honorary Award: Accepted by Brian Winters. Interview with Norm Dicks and Jon Jarvis

Aired the week of 11/16/11 - #1146

This show features two special interviews: there is an interview with Washington Senator Norm Dicks and the Director of the National Park Service Jon Jarvis (which you can listen to as the interview clip for the show). There is also a special honorary E-Chievement Award given during the show.

For the Honorary E-Chievement Award, eTown recognizes the work of many in bringing about the start of the nation’s largest dam removal project. (In the early 1900’s two privately installed dams were built, choking the Elwha River, decimating its native salmon population and negatively impacting the environment as well as the local economy; it’s been a several decade community effort to get them removed.)

Countless individuals and organizations have worked to remove the dams from the Elwha River (including representatives from the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe, eight federal agencies, three state agencies, local and county governments and dozens of NGOs and private citizens).

On their behalf, Brian Winter accepts this Honorary E-Chievement Award. (Brian is a fisheries biologist and Elwha Project Manager who has been part of the Elwha project with three different organizations – the Point No Point Treaty Council, the National Marine Fisheries Service and most recently, the National Park Service.)
