Julie and her husband Howard Drossman co-founded the nonprofit Catamount Institute, whose mission is to inspire ecological stewardship through education and leadership. They offer an innovative after school and summer camp program called the Young Environmental Stewards (YES) Program for kids in 4th grade and up, including at-risk and underserved children. They provide prolonged stewardship and leadership training via year-long school-based service project opportunities. At the time of the show’s original airing, over 1,700 young stewards had participated in creating projects like school gardens, recycling programs, and creek clean-ups, benefiting over 6,500 of their fellow students.
