MaryEllen Schneider

Aired the week of 08/01/12 - #1231

MaryEllen has had a lifelong love of dogs and has volunteered in hospitals and reading programs with her own dog. In 2003, she co-founded this nonprofit project which is successfully using dogs in inner-city Chicago classrooms to help children learn to read. Reading with and to dogs helps tackle the serious issue of childhood literacy in a fun way. And it works. They designed and follow a comprehensive curriculum and evaluate their work showing that test scores are improving. When this interview originally aired, they’d reached over 3,000 children since starting in 2003.
