Richard Cherry

Aired the week of 12/07/11 - #1149

Richard founded the nonprofit Community Environmental Center (CEC) in New York City, in 1994. He wanted to address the housing and energy efficiency needs of low- and middle-income communities and improve the dwellings of the city’s residents, and at the same time benefit the world around us. At the time of the original broadcast, through weatherization alone, CEC had helped over 300,000 people save more than $300 million in utility costs and prevented the emission of over a billion pounds of carbon dioxide. CEC has also expanded its programs to include green jobs training, the salvaging and reuse of hundreds of tons of building materials, and educating tens of thousands of young people and citizens about their role in the future of the planet. CEC is now the largest not-for-profit energy-conservation organization in New York State.
