Tom Bell

A native of Wyoming, Tom Bell always loved the outdoors and wanted to help raise awareness on issues affecting the West that were not being addressed by mainstream media. In 1969 Tom began High Country News, a newspaper to address environmental and public health issues. Tom’s work helped give voice to efforts throughout the West and 40 years later, High Country News remains a highly regarded environmental publication. Among other successes, Tom’s work helped to establish Wyoming’s strip mining regulations as the strictest in the U.S. The newspaper has 24,000 subscribers and 75,000 website visitors each month.
