Blues Traveler and Ruthie Foster in eTown

Apart from the band’s annual Fourth of July show at Red Rocks, it’s tough to imagine a better local setting for a Blues Traveler show than the eTown radio concert series on the Boulder Theatre stage. The intimate feel of the venue, the conversational structure of the show, the large and loyal Blues Traveler fanbase in the eTown audience — all of these factors worked in the band’s favor during its appearance in Boulder last night. It was an atmosphere that gave the quintet space to deliver its best-known hits, reflect on its 25-year history and cover some tunes that, judging from the standing ovations, resonated deeply.

Earle eager to play eTown
January 19, 2012 / David Young / Fort Collins Coloradoan

Justin Townes Earle doesn’t get nervous before going onstage, but his bladder does. The alt-country singer/songwriter admitted he has to pee several times before performing, but once the show starts, usually the urge dissipates. Earle will make sure to address the issue before he steps onstage to perform live for the nationally syndicated music radio show eTown. The syndicated program features a mix of live performances and interviews.

In a December phone interview, Earle said he is excited for his debut on the Boulder-based program, which will be taped at the Lincoln Center. While Earle’s father, the prolific country rocker Steve Earle, has appeared on eTown multiple times throughout the years, Earle said he has never attended an eTown taping and is unsure what to expect. Earle said he has listened to the program over the years and thinks it will be interesting to perform on the show.

Elwha dam removals — ‘eTown’ crowd roars out approval at Port Angeles radio show
September 18, 2011 / Diane Urbani de la Paz / Peninsula Daily News

PORT ANGELES — When asked, the fans didn’t merely cheer. They roared.

Saturday night at Port Angeles High School’s Performing Arts Center, the national radio show “eTown” held court, bringing the California indie-rock band Cake, Texas Music Hall of Fame artist Eliza Gilkyson and singer-songwriter-banjo man Danny Barnes together for a historic party.

The “eTown” program, taped for later broadcast on some 300 radio stations across the country, will tell Port Angeles’ success story: Two nearly century-old dams are being removed, to restore the Elwha River to health.

And this nearly sold-out event, capping a week that included the Elwha River Science Symposium and ceremonies with state and federal officials, turned out to be one exuberant night.

The show began with cohost Helen Forster asking the audience to do an applause sound check.

As she gave her cue, the 1,156-seat auditorium erupted in gusto.

“I love that,” Forster said.

Featured Artist and Song of the Day: Joe Purdy (with the eTown band), “Pioneer”
July 20, 2011 / Nels Thoreson / Denver Music

Today’s “Featured Artist and Song of the Day” showcases one of the best singer/songwriters of our time, Joe Purdy, accompanied by the eTown Band, with his song, “Pioneer,” off his latest album, This American.  This is a really special “Featured Artist and Song of the Day” because of the combination of what this video entails.

The video is from a recent taping of the eTown radio show at the Boulder Theater, which showcased Joe Purdy and DeVotchKa.  eTown is a weekly radio show that is aired throughout the country, and has been for over 20 years.  eTown, however, is much more than just a radio program, for it not only focuses on the music, but communities, the environment, and each broadcast awards an E-chievement Award to people making a difference in their communities.  The hosts, Nick and Helen Forster, not only lead the broadcast, but are incredible artists themselves.  The video below shows Nick rocking the mandolin to Purdy’s tune, and Helen’s beautiful voice supports as back-up vocals.

Photo essay: Arlo Guthrie, Reed Foehl @ the Boulder Theater

Legendary folk singers Arlo Guthrie and Reed Foehl played the Boulder Theater on Wednesday night for a special eTown taping. Guthrie had the audience in the palm of his hands the entire time, captivating them with his meaningful and political lyrics. (full article)

Live review: Flobots, Teddy Thompson @ the Boulder Theater (eTown)
March 28, 2011 / Nathan Rist / Reverb

Flobots opened the evening strong with tracks off of their 2010 album “Survival Story.” Compared to my last experience seeing them play on the University of Colorado campus for a college-aged crowd, it was nice to see gray haired men enjoying the music as much as the 20-somethings. Live review: Martin Sexton, Nellie McKay @ the Boulder Theater
Feb. 15, 2011 / Craig Randall / Reverb

Etown gigs are famous for their left-leaning audiences, but politics mostly took a backseat during Martin Sexton’s Valentine’s Day taping at the Boulder Theater. Sexton’s rather tousled appearance suggested he could have very well been plucked from nearby Pearl Street’s stable of street performers, yet underneath the shabby facade was an incredible voice and effortless guitar playing. Jan. 18, 2011 / Wendy Kale / Colorado Daily

Wednesday night, the singer-songwriter showcases his dancey new tunes at a sold-out “etown” taping at the Boulder Theater. “You really don’t start living until you do something to give back,” Dennen said. “I love playing music and hearing the stories about how my music affects people. Live review: Keller Williams, Marc Broussard @ the Boulder Theater (eTown)
Jan. 17, 2011 / Nate Etter / Reverb

Nick and Helen Forster’s nationally-syndicated weekly radio show, eTown, opened its 2011 season at the Boulder Theater on Sunday night to a sold out crowd and two great guests: Louisiana’s Marc Broussard and the always entertaining master-of-all-trades Keller Williams. The evening, which was sponsored by Celestial Seasonings, New Belgium brewing and Rudi’s bakery, was a thought-provoking mix of artist interviews, music and environmental discussion. It is a mix that has made eTown a Boulder staple and national hit for just shy of 20 years. (full article)

Keller Williams goes green for Boulder’s ‘etown’
Jan. 12, 2011 / Wendy Kale / Colorado Daily

Keller Williams likes to step beyond his musical boundaries, so he has a few new tricks up his sleeve this year. The innovative guitarist is touring behind a covers record that gives new meaning to tunes by Amy Winehouse and Ryan Adams — and he released his debut children’s album. Williams is really stepping things up with a Sunday “etown” appearance at the Boulder Theater. (full article)

Live review: Indigo Girls, Tim O’Brien (eTown) @ the Boulder Theater
Nov. 22, 2010 / Colleen Smith / Reverb

The Indigo Girls presented several songs from their new holiday record “Holly Happy Days” during their appearance on eTown Sunday night at the Boulder Theater. Warmly welcomed on a cold winter’s night, the Indigo Girls performed their first set with backup from the eTones. (full article)

Live review: The Hold Steady, Josh Ritter @ Griffin Concert Hall
Nov. 11, 2010 / Cassandra Schoon / Reverb

Something about the idyllic, snowy landscape of the CSU campus made it a perfect place to take in the lyrically intense-lineup of Josh Ritter and the Hold Steady at Wednesday night’s eTown taping. Perhaps it was the contrast of the cold weather outside and the warm, acoustically brilliant space of the Edna Rizley Griffin Concert Hall that made it a great evening to take in artfully-crafted songs about broken hearts and lonely travels. The Reverb Interview: Cyndi Lauper
Sept. 23, 2010 / Ricardo Baca / Reverb

Cyndi Lauper singing the blues? It doesn’t seem like the most natural pairing. But while “Memphis Blues” has gotten mixed reviews, it’s simple to applaud Lauper’s child-like excitement and fearlessness as she attempts blues standards such as “Rollin’ and Tumblin’” and “Crossroads.” “The blues are the root of everything that we do on radio today,” said Lauper, who brings her bluesy road show to Denver’s Paramount Theatre tonight for an eTown taping. Club Notes: Cloud Cult
Sept. 10, 2010 / Wendy Kale / Daily Camera

Cloud Cult might be the perfect band to play Boulder’s environmentally friendly “etown” show. Frontman Craig Minowa lives on an organic farm, Cloud Cult’s records are produced without harming the planet and the group donates profits to environmental causes. That said, Cloud Cult’s also making waves with its artsy brand of indie-pop. Sunday, the band will show off tunes from its new CD,Light Chasers,at “etown’s” Boulder Theater taping. (full article)

Live review: Lyle Lovett, Taj Mahal @ Red Rocks Amphitheatre
Aug. 2, 2010 / Candace Horgan / Reverb

I would have thought that after the epic storm on July 4 at Blues Traveler, I’d paid my Red Rocks weather-penance for the summer, but evidently the flying monkeys had other ideas. After a calm, but overcast start for Taj Mahal during the eTown Green Rocks event Friday night, which included a sultry, sexy, “Lovin’ in My Baby’s Arms,” the rain let loose during the first half of Lyle Lovett’s set.
