Event Synopsis:
The traditional bluegrass quintet of instruments (banjo, mandolin, violin, guitar and bass) has been explored by musicians throughout the world, in countless combinations for decades.  As these new acoustic musical directions continue to be developed in unexpected ways, this concert will be something truly innovative.  Composer Matt McBane has written a new composition specifically for this instrumentation, and it sits in a new place ¾ one where contemporary classical post-minimalism meets skillful technique and bluegrass drive.  The Brooklyn-based composer has written this long-form work specifically for Expedition, and the concert at eTown Hall is the world premiere.

The members of Expedition have a long history of forging paths playing adventurous string band music, and are Jake Schepps (banjo), Matt Flinner (mandolin), Ryan Drickey (violin), the great Ross Martin (guitar, not pictured) and the indomitable Eric Thorin (bass). This new McBane work will be released on CD in August 2014 with other works by Marc Mellits, Gyan Riley, and Matt Flinner.
