Jamie Cullum & Glenn Tilbrook

Air dates: Sep 29-Oct 05, 2004
Tape location:Boulder Theater

In another British Invasion show, young British sensation, Jamie Cullum pays etown a visit for the first time. Jamie is the biggest selling UK jazz artist ever and has quickly taken the rest of the world by storm. Songwriter and frontman for Squeeze and now a successful solo artist, Glenn Tilbrook also makes his first visit to etown. Tilbrook has perfected a signature style marked by brilliant melodic invention, cheeky humor and slice-of-life pathos, all wrapped up with unshakable hooks and his golden boy tenor. And, rounding out the hour is the incredible story from this week's e-chievement award winner.

Jamie Cullum
Every now and then, we get to present a new artist who, we think, will really take off. We were lucky enough to be able to bring you Ben Harper and Ani DiFranco, for example, very early in their careers. Jamie Cullum is another one of those special newcomers. His sound ranges from mature interpretations of classic ballads to piano-pounding versions of his own new tunes. Cullum is the biggest selling UK jazz artist ever and is making his mark in America as a scrappy, young (only 24) performer and showman. His songs are all over VH1 plus he's performing on The Tonight Show and other network TV shows. He's a real talent who knows how to make jazz accessible. "Mr. Cullum…is a natural showman with the confidence of a bantam rooster waking up the neighborhood with his crowing", says the New York Times.

Glenn Tilbrook
Joining us from London is Glenn Tilbrook, the songwriter and frontman of Squeeze for over 25 years. Tilbrook is out on his own now, and his prowess as a tunesmith is just as keen as ever. USA Today says, "Tilbrook has...a sweetly plangent tenor and keen melodic savvy". His great songs tell real stories of real people, using his cheeky sense of humor.

e-chievement award: Charles Best, DonorsChoose
This week's award winner is the founder of DonorsChoose, an innovative organization that uses a new model of citizen philanthropy and the power of the internet to help fund teacher-developed proposals. Since its inception in 2000, more than 1,300 classrooms have received over $2 million worth of student resources via direct donor-funded proposals.
