Dave Alvin & North Mississippi Allstars

Air dates: Apr 26-May 02, 2006
Tape location:The Boulder Theater

Grammy award winner Dave Alvin brings his original country blues and rockabilly roots music to etown this week. As a member of the band the Blasters, Alvin made his mark on rockabilly music, and has gone on to work with a variety of artists both as a musician and producer. Joining Dave Alvin and returning are etown favorites the North Mississippi Allstars carting a bushel of their brand of cottonfield psychedelia and innovative energy. It's high powered music, and another high quality e-chievement award winner in this week's etown.

North Mississippi Allstars
North Mississippi Allstars are brothers Luther and Cody Dickinson and Chris Chews, all were raised in musical families, steeped in the sounds of the North Mississippi hill country. The Dickinson kids, from an early age, visited recording sessions helmed by their dad, legendary Memphis producer Jim Dickinson. Cody, NMA's drummer, first played professionally at age 11. A North Mississippi Allstars performance will inevitably show their roots, but also all they've picked up along the way playing blues, gospel, rock and punk. Their show will be simultaneously innovative and archival, at times sounding historical but also improvisational.

e-chievement award: Justin Baker, Conscious Alliance
Justin is the young founder of Conscious Alliance, a non-profit organization that organizes food drives to benefit food pantries and impoverished Indian Reservations across the U.S. Justin collects canned food in a unique way: he travels thousands of miles across the country to ask concert attendees to bring cans of food (or a cash donation) in exchange for a custom designed concert poster. In 2004, he traveled over 20,000 miles in pursuit of his mission! Since the program began in 2002, he has collected over 200,000 pounds of food items that he has then personally delivered to food pantries and reservations. He has also been able to collect enough funds to launch Project Restoration, which will provide a brand new food storage/delivery facility on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota.
