Author Dave Eggers is the best-selling author of "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius." In 2002, Dave used earnings from his book to launch the non-profit 826 Valencia, in San Francisco, which helps less privileged students, ages 8–18, to develop their writing skills, by offering free drop-in tutoring, workshops, exam prep, publishing services, and much more. The center, with over 1,000 volunteer-mentors, has reached over 16,000 young people since its inception. And, it has led to the establishment of 826National, consisting of five additional "826" sites around the country, reaching thousands more.
