eTown welcomes another great pairing of musical guests for a solar-powered evening of music and conversation at eTown Hall.
Quickly approaching the two-decade mark of existence, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy is a band that is continuing to gain momentum with its one-of-a-kind vintage sound. In it’s first years, having secured their legendary residency at the Derby nightclub in Los Angeles, they reminded the world—in the middle of the grunge era, no less—that it was still cool to swing, big band style. The band makes this stop in eTown to share music from its latest collection of tunes, entitled Rattle Them Bones.
By now the world knows the essential story of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy—the band co-founded by Scotty Morris and drummer Kurt Sodergren made their debut in their hometown of Ventura, California in April of 1993 helping to usher in the swing revival founded on a colorful fusion of classic American sounds including jazz, swing, and dixieland mixed with the energy and spirit of contemporary culture. They proved to be among the standout groups that launched the new swing era in the 90′s.
Joining Big Bad Voodoo Daddy at the taping will be long-time friend of the show, Nellie McKay, who will be making another visit to eTown to share some of her latest musical creations and stories with the audience. Odds are, you have heard her unique sound somewhere. Nellie has won a Theatre World Award for her portrayal of Polly Peachum in the Broadway production of The Threepenny Opera and performed onscreen in the film PS I Love You, as well as writing original music for the Rob Reiner film Rumor Has It. Her music has also been heard on the TV shows such as Weeds, Grey’s Anatomy, NCIS, Privileged and Nurse Jackie. In 2010, the Chase Brock Experience produced a ballet of her third album, Obligatory Villagers, while Nellie recently finished contributing to the soundtrack for the HBO series Boardwalk Empire.
A recipient of The Humane Society’s Doris Day Music Award in recognition of her dedication to animal rights, Nellie is known as an outspoken and fierce advocate for feminism, civil rights and other deeply felt progressive ideals.
More than just a typical concert, each eTown taping is a unique live entertainment event that combines musical performance, information and inspiring conversation. In addition to lots of great music, the event will also feature a special E-Chievement Award story, a trademark staple of each and every eTown taping, highlighting one of the show’s listeners who have gone above and beyond to make a positive difference in their community.
