eTown hosts Nick and Helen Forster welcome two world-class artists, Marcia Ball and Paul Thorn for a very special live radio show taping featuring music steeped in the traditions of the American south, and lots of great conversation to go with it.

Marcia Ball will make her third stop in eTown, and her very first at eTown’s new solar-powered music facility – eTown Hall. Born in Texas and raised in Louisiana, Ball’s piano playing, singing and songwriting have earned her a worldwide reputation for igniting a full-scale roadhouse rhythm and blues party every time she strolls on stage. Her groove-laden New Orleans boogie and rollicking Gulf Coast blues have made her a one-of-a-kind favorite with music fans all over the world. Ball’s musical journey and body of work has earned her countless awards and accolades along the way. She was inducted into the Austin Music Hall of Fame in 1990, and her latest record, Roadside Attractions, was Grammy Nominated for Blues Album of the Year in 2011.

“Based in Austin and steeped in New Orleans, Marcia Ball plumbs the richness of both musical meccas. From rootsy swamp pop and blues-drenched boogie woogie to languid ballads, Ball is equally comfortable with brash roadhouse romps and caressing love songs.” –USA Today

Joining Marcia Ball this evening will be eTown newcomer Paul Thorn. Thorn has been pleasing crowds for years with his muscular brand of roots music – bluesy, rocking and thoroughly Southern, yet also speaking universal truths. The Tupelo, MS native worked in a furniture factory, jumped out of airplanes, and was professional boxer before sharing his experiences to the world as a singer-songwriter. His last album, Pimps & Preachers, which topped the Americana charts for 3 weeks and broke into the Billboard Top 100, perfectly exemplified the vivid scope of his songwriting but also his family background. While his father is a Church of God Pentecostal minster, his uncle (his father’s brother) spent time as a pimp. Thorn was influenced by both of these men, and you’ll hear it in his music!

More than just a typical concert, each eTown taping is a unique live entertainment event that combines musical performance, information and inspiring conversation. In addition to lots of great music, the event will also feature a special E-Chievement Award story, a trademark staple of each and every eTown taping, highlighting one of the show’s listeners who have gone above and beyond to make a positive difference in their community.
