eTown gears up for yet another exciting live radio show taping, this time welcoming back the Irish sounds of musical group Solas along with musician, conceptual artist and poet Terry Allen.
Solas is the quintessential Irish-American band recording and touring in the US today. Fifteen years ago, in a manner befitting their name (Gaelic for “light”), Solas burst onto the Irish music scene and instantly became an incandescent ensemble that found contemporary relevance in timeless traditions without ever stooping to clichés. Now with ten albums under their belt, and anchored by founding members Seamus Egan (flute, tenor banjo, mandolin, whistles, guitars, bodhran) and Winifred Horan (violins, vocals), Solas is rounded out by Mick McAuley (accordions, low whistle, concertina, vocals), Eamon McElholm (guitars, keyboards, vocals), and newest member and lead singer, Niamh Varian-Barry. Through fresh and unexpected arrangements of age-old tunes, compelling and topical originals and covers, and unparalleled musicianship, Solas continues to define the path for the Celtic music world and drive the genre forward. They’ll be making their third appearance in eTown, and we’re excited to have them back with us!
Joining Solas at the taping is legendary songwriter Terry Allen, who will be making his first appearance in eTown. As an artist and musician, Allen originally began making his mark on the world from the small town of Lubbock, Texas, where he was a high school classmate with the likes of Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock. His 1979 album, entitled Lubbock (On Everything), has been heralded as one of the finest country albums of all time, and a corner stone of the origins of the Alt-Country genre. In addition to the 11 albums under his belt, Allen is also well known as a visual artist, with commissioned sculptures, installations, and public art works and gallery showings around the world.
More than just a typical concert, each eTown taping is full of lots of great music and conversation, plus an inspiring E-Chievement Award story highlighting someone who has gone above and beyond to make a difference in their community.
