eTown welcomes indie trio Tennis and British singer/songwriter Neil Halstead for an intimate evening of music and conversation at eTown’s new state-of-the-art venue – eTown Hall.
Denver-based trio Tennis will make its first stop in eTown to share a sound that has music enthusiasts and critics around the country in a frenzy. In its relatively young lifespan, the band has already logged thousands of road miles, made recent appearances on shows like Conan and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and provided music for TV shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Revenge and The Secret Circle. If Tennis’ debut album, Cape Dory, was a narrative of a specific time and sensation, the group’s follow-up, Young and Old, is its antithesis. The new disc, recorded in Nashville with Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney, embraces a grander landscape of ideas and feelings, revealing a riskier, looser version of the band. Young and Old debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Heatseeker Chart, #1 on CMJ Top 200, where it remained for three weeks in a row and debuted on Soundscan’s “New Artist Chart” at #1, remaining there for nine consecutive weeks.
“Their dreamy, nostalgic pop laps and recedes like waves hitting the shore.” —The New York Times
Joining Tennis at the taping will be British shoegaze veteran Neil Halstead, who will also be making his first visit to eTown. Over the past 23 years, Neil Halstead has earned an ardent following by making intensely atmospheric music with a near-hypnotic power. Hailed by AllMusic as “one of Britain’s most respected songwriters,” the singer/guitarist served as frontman and primary songwriter for Slowdive (the legendary shoegaze outfit whose seminal studio albums include 1993’s Souvlaki, co-produced by Brian Eno). After its 1995 breakup, Slowdive morphed into the Halstead-helmed Mojave 3 and released a string of highly celebrated records that merged jangly alt-country with dusky dream-pop. In 2006 Mojave 3 went on indefinite hiatus, prompting Halstead to embark on an acoustic-driven solo career marked by British-folk-inspired melody and ethereal nylon-string strumming. At the taping, Halstead will share insight into his long musical path, as well as music from his latest release of recordings, entitled Palindrome Hunches.
More than just a typical concert, each eTown taping is a unique live entertainment event that combines musical performance, information and inspiring conversation. In addition to lots of great music, the event will also feature a special E-Chievement Award story, a trademark staple of each and every eTown taping, highlighting one of the show’s listeners who have gone above and beyond to make a positive difference in their community.
