It’s a special show of fresh bluegrass music as Sam Grisman Project and Viv & Riley share the stage with Nick, Helen and the eTones. Nick also has an intriguing chat with Lucy Wallace of Dance To Be Free–a non-profit organization that works for prison inmate reform through the power of dance.
The Sam Grisman Project channels one of the deepest wells in American acoustic music. Growing up in the house where his father David Grisman and Jerry Garcia recorded some of their most timeless sessions, Sam absorbed the camaraderie and joy of that music and now presents it in his own unique style and voice. With his band, he celebrates that legacy by curating their repertoire alongside fresh originals, showcasing the timelessness of David and Jerry’s music.
Carrying that thread of honoring the past while forging ahead, Viv & Riley arrived with Imaginary People in 2023, their Free Dirt Records release. Rooted in folk tradition but boldly pushing into indie and experimental territory, the duo’s songs explore bittersweet nostalgia, community and growth. Now based in Durham, North Carolina, they’re part of a thriving scene that encourages risk, collaboration and reinvention—qualities that have earned them acclaim since their earliest days.
That same spirit of transformation guides Boulder’s own Lucy Wallace. Founder of Dance To Be Free, Lucy blends her background in psychology with a lifelong passion for movement, bringing dance programs into 25 U.S. prisons since 2015. Her work — featured at Emerging Women and TEDx — reminds us that creativity and connection can be powerful forces for freedom and healing.
