Tom Costello – The Joy of Sox (Socks)

Tom Costello used to be chronically homeless-phobic. One day after spending some time volunteering at a soup kitchen to overcome his fear, Tom's wife told him that the homeless had tremendous health problems with their feet and lower extremities and disproportionately suffer from foot-related afflictions such as swelling, blisters, skin infections, and frostbite because they often don’t have socks. So in 2009, Tom gathered a few bags of socks together and distributed them at a local homeless shelter. That experience profoundly changed his life - he knew he had to be "the sock guy." Tom founded the non-profit “The Joy of Sox" to collects and distribute socks to the homeless in 14 states and 3 countries. He and his team of nearly 100 volunteers have given away well over 120,000 pairs of socks to date, impacting more than 75,000 homeless men, women and children.
