Formed in Boulder in 1978, the pioneering band that included eTown’s own Nick Forster will be honored September 18 with one of the genre’s most prestigious accolades
It’s official — and we at eTown couldn’t be prouder: Hot Rize, the groundbreaking bluegrass band that included our own Nick Forster will be inducted into the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame on September 18. You can watch the live stream of the event, including their induction, on volume.com. Registration is free.

Since their formation in Colorado in 1978, Hot Rize has stood at the forefront of bluegrass music. With a legendary lineup featuring Tim O’Brien, Pete Wernick, Nick Forster (eTown’s co-founder and host) and the late Charles Sawtelle, the band pioneered a fresh and dynamic sound that blended deep traditional roots with creative innovation. Following Charles’ passing, acclaimed guitarist Bryan Sutton joined the band in 2002, helping carry forward their signature sound. Their tight harmonies, virtuosic playing and charismatic live shows — often featuring their comic western alter-egos Red Knuckles and the Trailblazers — made them one of the most beloved and influential bands in bluegrass history.
Hot Rize’s legacy includes a GRAMMY nomination, multiple acclaimed albums, International Bluegrass Music Association’s (IBMA) very first Entertainer of the Year award and an enduring impact on the global bluegrass and acoustic music community. More than that, Hot Rize brought us music that was at the forefront of Americana, bridging traditional string band roots with forward-thinking songwriting, sharp wit and a spirit of innovation that continues to inspire generations of artists and fans to this day.
From all of us at eTown, we send our heartfelt congratulations to Nick, Tim, Pete, Charles (in spirit) and everyone who’s ever been part of the Hot Rize journey. This honor is richly deserved
