Sixpence None the Richer
Named in honor of a passage from C.S. Lewis’ Mere Christianity, Nashville-based quartet SIX PENCE NONE THE RICHER burst onto the commercial music scene in the late ’90s with their breakthrough self-titled album featuring the Grammy-nominated number one hit “Kiss Me” and its smash follow-up “There She Goes.”
Prior to their mainstream success, the band originally formed in the early ’90s when guitarist Matt Slocum met lead vocalist Leigh Nash at a church retreat. With T.J. Behling as bassist, the then trio recorded its first demo in 1993 with the R.E.X. label, followed by their debut LP, The Fatherless & the Widow and 1995′s This Beautiful Mess.
After achieving widespread critical acclaim for “Kiss Me,” the band embarked on a continent-hopping world tour that kept them on the road for over a year. Following a well-deserved rest, the quartet (including guitarist Sean Kelly and new bassist Justin Cary), joined by new drummer Rob Mitchell and keyboardist Jerry Dale McFadden, returned to the studio in the spring of 2000 to begin recording new material. In the fall of 2002, the long-awaited fourth album from Sixpence None The Richer, “Divine Discontent” (Reprise), was released.
