Tommy Clark – Urban Bicycle Food Ministry
Tommy Clark is a minister, competitive cyclist AND a guy who loves to cook! A few years ago, wanting to combine his personal passions to help others, Tommy came up with a unique way to bring both sustenance and friendship to the homeless, the Urban Bicycle Food Ministry.
The Urban Bicycle Food Ministry is an ecumenical, non-profit organization, built on the foundation and the principals of the synoptic Gospels. Though it is a Christian based organization, it is very inclusive. All people of different faiths are encouraged to participate. The organization believes that small concrete acts of kindness are the fundamentals that bring light and love to a community. All it requires is a bicycle, backpack, and a giving spirit.
The Urban Bicycle Food Ministry falls into the idea of a “church without walls”. They are a church in the sense of an assembly of people. Their church building is their city. They are an active church. They are not evangelists. They go to their neighbors on the streets; meet them where they are with food and essential supplies and remind them that they are loved, cared for, and prayed for regularly.
Their actions are encouraged by:
Matthew 5:13-14
“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.” There are good things happing in Memphis TN. The city is being “seasoned”. Passion for people is deeply rooted in its history. Love for the city is emerging from all of its corners. There is a movement for peace, love, and justice happening and UBFM is on the front line of it armed with compassion for their neighbors and a giving spirit.
Luke 6:20-21 “Jesus raised his eyes to his disciples and said: ‘Happy are you who are poor, because God’s kingdom is yours.
Happy are you who hunger now, because you will be satisfied. Happy are you who weep now, because you will laugh.’” Hate does exist in the world. One does not have to search to find it. UBFM seeks to extinguish that dark cloud that looms in places and they seek to bring happiness to their brothers and sisters by means of genuine relationships.
Their goal: To fulfill the Gospel on two wheels.
Their Mission: To offer needs to the people of their community, one interaction at a time.
